Adobe Home Decor by the Nile River in Egypt!

In southern Egypt along the Nile River banks, a group of Egyptian people called "Nubians" reside. Nuba is a small village in Aswan, Egypt that is known for its brilliant architecture and design that combines simple structure with bold colors.

Fun fact: Nuba is visited as often as the famous Pharos Pyramids in Egypt.

The beautiful houses are built from adobe, which are un-burnt bricks made of sun-dried earth and straw. The house designs are also as natural and primitive as the building materials. The structures of the homes are usually a square or triangle with a door and a small set of stairs. The houses are always one floor in height, with the larger homes having an open-air area. Some of them have domes to help keep the house in shade and cool in the hot weather. For aesthetics, some also add playful shapes on the house edges like semi-circles or triangle end shapes.

Nuba homes give an inspirational nod to the importance and happiness of design for smaller homes and people on a tight budget. It shows that a great design makes a difference, even in small spaces. The Nubians who built this village are people with simple lives that have held on to their design heritage despite Western influences.

All of the colors used in Nuba homes are bright summer colors such as red, green, orange and light shades of blue, purple and pink. This bright color palette is very cheerful and welcoming. Although not everyone has the boldness to apply such colors to their entire home, they can certainly add them in smaller design expressions like in a child’s room or with bright furniture pieces. It's also intriguing to know that Nubians wear clothing in similar bright colors, especially the beautiful white “Jellabiya” which is a traditional dress for both men and women.

In addition to the bright colors, every house in Nuba is like a painting. Nubians draw on the walls of the house on both the inside and outside. The drawings and motifs include the natural artistic expressions of the homeowner or family to demonstrate art and beauty in their homes.

The inspiration behind the drawings is mainly from natural elements such as palm trees, birds, fish, and small animals. There are also ethnic symbols expressed such as the "The blue hand palm” that many believe protects them from envious people. You can also often see drawings of Nubian children and their pets on the walls such as a small donkey or a lamb!

In addition, geometric motifs especially triangles are very dominant in the wall drawings. Triangles are drawn to form frames and other geometric and linear motifs on door frames, ceilings, and in front of a home.

The interior of a Nuba home is also simple and colorful as the outside. Similar bright colors are used for the walls, curtains, and furniture. Floral prints are dominant when it comes to sofas and many interior bedding sheets. The sofas are often aligned along the entire wall of the room and height of the sofa is kept low. There are also geometric motifs and drawings on the inside walls.

Another common material used is wicker for the furniture. Nubas use wicker for chairs, tables, and baskets. Some keep the wicker color beige and brown, while others add fun colors to them for a bright and bold look. The rugs in the Nuba homes also have geometric and colorful prints on them especially triangles and made of palm and other materials.

You too can give your home a refreshing and cheerful touch by adding paintings, drawings or decals to your wall. Art on the wall always creates a beautiful eye-catching effect to any house or apartment and can be customized for each individual's artistic expressions.
